Nothing screams the Fourth of July like barbecues, booze and fireworks. It is the ultimate holiday where people can let go and spend time with their friends and family to celebrate freedom and independence. Even while we're celebrating the great red, white and blue, we are also beginning the middle of the year, which makes us want to kick our new year's resolutions into gear.
Every year, my New Year's resolution is to become more independent than I am at the time. Unfortunately, many people don't know what it really means to be independent and want to know how to grow in that area. Well, look no further! Here are some steps on how to fly solo without using others as a crutch:
1. Have a plan.
My grandmother always tells me, "if you don't have a plan, you have a problem." Setting your mind on something and writing it down is the first step to independency. Speak things into existence and watch your dreams come into fruition.
2. Get a job.
I know that it may not sound easy or appealing, but it's a start. It doesn't necessarily have to be your dream job or something that you see yourself particularly doing, as long as there's some cash flow and that it's legal. Making your own money and using it to buy your own things, picking up a bill or two, or saving towards your plan is the best feeling in the world. Taking on more responsibilities, while investing in yourself and your future, is another great step to becoming more independent.
3. Make your own decisions.
Your mom, dad, sister, brother and best friend all have your best interest at heart, but you need to make decisions on your own. It's your life and you have to make decisions that are going to benefit you and make you happy. It's okay to ask for advice and for some guidance, but it is up to YOU to determine the end result.
4. Enjoy the ride.
The journey to independency can be stressful, but it is completely worth it. Your life truly begins when you're independent and don't depend on anyone else. You have to be able to take risks in order for your dreams to come true and to grow. We may be in the middle of the year, but that doesn't mean that it's too late. Don't be too hard on yourself and don't be afraid to fall down a couple of times. Take charge of your life with confidence and always get back up again.
What makes you independent?
