Hello everyone! Today is a very special day. It's the first day of fall AND I have a new spotlight to share with you guys. This spotlight is extremely special because this beautiful young woman is my ultimate hair crush/hair twin! Let me introduce you guys to the amazing Bianca Alexa!
Bianca is an England native, raised in Puerto Rico and is now living in California. She has a huge following on social media and started her YouTube after popular demand from her followers who wanted to learn more about her beautiful natural hair.
While transitioning, I was searching for someone with hair like my own. I wanted to learn how to take care of my hair once I cut the rest of my strands off (that I was secretly holding on to). That's when I found Bianca on Youtube.
When I started watching her videos, she helped me feel confident about my curly hair. I learned how to take care of it and how to keep my curls defined. I was so excited to see how my hair would respond to her tips and tricks. Unknowingly, she helped me decide to speed up the process. So, one night, while watching her videos, I cut off the rest of my permed hair and began my journey and I thank God for her.
I can go on and on about how much of an inspiration Bianca was and still is to me, but I'll let you guys experience her greatness yourselves. I hope you guys enjoy the interview. Dios los bendiga (God bless).
Introduce yourself king or queen.
Hey guys! I’m Bianca Alexa known to the youtube world as SimplyBiancaAlexa or bummblebee7 to my fellow instagramers
How long have you been natural?
Since March 2012
What motivated you to have healthier, natural hair?
I used to constantly relax and dye my hair, It was pretty long and I loved having my long straight hair, but over time the heat and chemical damage made my hair really thin and at one point my hair began excessively breaking and shedding. My intention wasn’t to go natural I just wanted my hair healthy again. I cut my hair shoulder length with the intent to keep it straight. As I was looking up short haircuts online I came across a natural hair blog and noticed how healthy and thick natural hair looked and that’s what made me decide to go natural.
Describe your hair by using a song lyric.
“ they love the way I walk ‘cause I walk with a vengeance. And they listen to me when I talk ‘cause I ain’t pretending. It took a while, now I understand just where I’m going I know the world and I know who I am it’s ‘bout time I show it.” –Beyonce Grown Woman
When did you start transitioning?
My last relaxer was in April 2011 (I remember because it was for my birthday haha)
What are the challenges that you've had while transitioning?
Learning how to style my hair in order to blend the different textures was challenging and trying to stay away from using heat.
What are some of the struggles that you are facing now being natural?
I adore my curls but it is WORK to detangle this mane! And it’s such an important step that you have to do with patience because yes it takes forever but it’s so worth it in the long run. It helps keep my hair healthy, I get less breakage and shedding whenever I detangle.
Were your friends and family supportive when you decided to change your lifestyle?
They were very supportive, that’s what really got me through the first couple of months my sisters and my boyfriend were always very encouraging.
Describe your hair regimen (in detail) and tell us your staple products.
For the most part its fairly simple. My products change constantly but the regimen remains the same. I wash my hair once a week, before wash day I finger detangle my hair with coconut oil and leave it in over night. In the morning I rinse out the oil and use a cleansing conditioner (instead of a shampoo) I am currently using As I Am coconut co-wash. I then rinse out this product and apply my conditioner (I use the conditioner to detangle my hair but also as a leave in) Giovanni conditioner is my current conditioner of choice. I rinse out 70% of the conditioner with cold water and then I apply my leave in I use Deva curl styling cream, it’s a bit pricey but it smells amazing and leaves my curls soft.
Who inspires you during your natural hair journey and who have you inspired?
Taren Guy first inspired me to go natural. I remember watching her videos when I was still relaxing my hair thinking how beautiful her curls were.
I have received a few messages and emails from people that follow me on instagram and youtube saying how I have inspired them to go natural. I am always so humbled and blessed to think that I could make an impact on someone’s life, even if I am just able to inspire one person that’s a huge deal to me. So I feel so lucky that people are so receptive to what I have to say.
If your hair had a name, what would it be and why?
Haha I’ve never thought about that before. My hair is a wild one, definitely has a mind of its own. She loves to be free, and unruly yet she demands a lot of attention. So it would definitely need to be a name that combines all of that.
