It's Wednesday and you know what time it is: IT'S TIME FOR OUR #WCW SPOTLIGHT! This week's #WCW is my fave. I'm excited about this one (like I am excited about every Spotlight). She is literally on my vision board as #hairgoals, which everyone should have on their vision board, right? Not only does she FULLY understand that smoothies are life, she's stunning, a headworker and very ambitious. Say "Hello" to the Queen: NzuriAnne.
As always, I find these Queens on social media. I saw some of NzuriAnne's modeling photos on tumblr and I was immediately drawn in by her luxurious locks. Her social media handles weren't anywhere to be found until a natural hair Instagram page posted one of her pics and tagged her in it. I automatically followed her on every social media she had (stalker much?)
Because she is such a dope individual, I KNEW that I wanted Nzuri to be featured on Heythat jaz. I can go on and on, but without further adieu, LETS GET INTO IT! I really hope you enjoy this interview with this gem because I LOVED EVERY MINUTE OF IT. Make sure you check her out on social media so that you can fall in love with her beautiful soul as well. Dios los bendiga (God Bless).
Introduce yourself queen.
I'm NzuriAnne , or just Zuri, or Young Zuri from Denver, Colorado. I'm 21 years old, I'm a makeup artist and brand . Check me out.
How long have you been natural?
I've been natural my entire life.
What motivated you to have healthier, natural hair?
Well I decided to check into healthier products and styling options when I started losing my curl sometime in high-school. My hair was all different lengths and didn't have one uniform curl pattern and it just wasn't soft so while lots of hours on google I figured my hair wasn't healthy and I made some changes.
Describe your hair by using a song lyric.
"You so slick, so small, curvy; teeth all pearly, hair all curly" - Fabolous
Have you always embraced your natural? If not, what made you fall in love with it again?
No I haven't always embraced my natural. I was teased a lot as a child by children in school and a few adults as well. I mean still am.. When I fell in love with my hair was when I fell in love with myself. I opened up to my mix, to my cultures, to my heart, and broke some of my bitter shyness and rocked all that shit. Now I'm here, natural and at peace.
What are some of the struggles that you face being natural and as your hair has grown?
Really the only real issues i have with my hair is how long it takes to detangle my hair and i dread doing it, I also hate living in a super dry climate that doesn't make my hair happy and as my hair grows, it gets kinda heavy lol
Who is your favorite #haircrushthrowback?
Prince Rogers Nelson #haircrush #wcw #mcm #bae
What does natural hair mean to you and what has accepting your natural hair done for you?
Natural hair is like a big "and what you gon do about it? / fuck off" to the world. Well, that's how good I feel when I'm rocking mine, lol. I loved my natural hair when I started loving myself and seeing others in the world who looked like me.
What is your “go-to” hair style?
I'm pretty plain and simple. my go to hair style is wearing it down until it gets super tangled and I'm forced to comb and wash it lol "coconut oil and go"
Describe your hair regimen (in detail) and tell us your staple products.
Deva curl No Poo / One condition / Ultra Defining Gel, Shea moisture curl enhancing smoothie, & unrefined coconut oil
How often do you trim your ends?
I dont trim my ends often enough, probably twice a year and that's not enough at all.
What is your one FAVORITE product that you CANNOT live without?
I cannot live without all of my devacurl products.
Any hair tips you’d like to share?
I don't have any tips besides the tips so many other girls give, just be healthy.
What is the first reaction you get when people see you with your long, luscious full head of hair?
People either glare at me or their eyes get big and they smile; not really much in-between . Or they run up to me like they see a puppy on the street and thats always uncomfortable.
What is your favorite comment and your least favorite comment regarding your hair?
I don't have a favorite comment when it comes to my hair. My least favorite is being compared to a lion or foxy cleopatra or like saying my hair is "funky/ hip / 70's/ afro" like nah, it's just curly, but thanks. Ha!
Who inspires you during your natural hair journey and who have you inspired?
Nobody really inspires me per-say. I just feel like this is me, but if I'm an inspiration to others out there I'm super honored!
If your hair had a name, what would it be and why?
My hair is Zuri , I'm Anne.
Tell us about your modeling career and YouTube channel. What’s the inspiration behind them?
My modeling career is evolving to be a total brand, my youtube page is flourishing as I learn more each time about how to make it in this industry. Patience & passion is my inspiration behind everything. I watch myself grow through my photos and videos and i love those who tune in to watch my journey.
